| The Transformation of Boscombe Seafront |
| The UK's most innovative and exciting seafront redevelopment scheme is currently transforming Boscombe Seafront. The centre-piece of this scheme is Europe's first artificial surf reef, which was granted a special environmental licence by the Marine and Fisheries Agency on the 13th December 2007. Construction of the surf reef is on course to start Spring 2008, with an anticipated completition in time for the October 2008 swell. In addition to the reef, work is nearing completion on the refurbishment of Boscombe Pier, which offers fantastic views of the bay and the reef. The grade II listed entrance building, dating from 1958 has been fully refurbished and will feature new catering and retail facilities in time for the summer of 2008. The derelict Overstrand building on the promenade opposite the surf reef is being transformed with the held of award winning designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway MBE of Hemingway Design. The building will feature some of the UK's most desirable beach huts, catering for both surfers and holiday makers. The Overstrand development will also include a surf-themed retail outlet, a surfing academy and a glass-fronted restaurant offering superb panoramic views of Bournemouth and the Solent. There will be a catering outlet selling good quality food-to-go, public changing rooms, toilets and hot showers. The area in front of the pier is being re landscaped to include a large piece of public art and a pedestrianised piazza meeting place. The pier is scheduled to reopen to the public in May, with the whole scheme anticipated for completion by October 2008. The beach will remain open to the public throughout the period of works, including the summer holidays. location. Prices and the sale date of the beach huts are yet to be confirmed. |
